Bergenfield - Members of the Zonta Club of Teaneck-Bergenfield recently attended the Zonta International Convention 2004 which took place in New York City at the Marriott Marquis Times Square Hotel. Among the members who attended were President Andrea Pieper, Past President Cindy Mento, and members Mary Ann Tarantula, Barbara Stellabotte, Kathy Holmes, Marilyn DeFeo and Carol Parker.

Zonta International, a worldwide service organization dedicated to improving the status of women, convenes every two years in a different part of the world. This convention was attended by close to 3000 members from the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, and Mexico.

Attendees were offered many options in order to enjoy the many attractions of New York City. The convention took place from July 3rd through July 9th so many conventioneers took advantage of the July 4th holiday and took cruises on the Hudson River to watch the fireworks near the Statue of Liberty. Other optional events included dining in various ethnic restaurants, Broadway theater outings, visits to Ellis Island and a tour of the United Nations.

During the business sessions, the concentration was on women’s issues, specifically women’s heath, security and economic viability. Seven days of learning and fun gave the attendees a renewed sense of commitment to Zonta and its works. Zonta has strong ties to the United Nations having given many grants to both UNICEF and UNIFEM. Zonta has partnered with these organizations to fund programs that assure the health of women and children, increase the chances of young women being educated and reduce the instances of domestic violence.

The Zonta Club of Teaneck-Bergenfield President, and delegate to the convention, Andrea Pieper enjoyed her time at the convention and learned a great deal that will hold her in good stead during the two years of her term. All the members who attended enjoyed the mixture of business and pleasure and were happy to have been able to attend the convention.

The Zonta Club of Teaneck-Bergenfield meets every third Tuesday, September through June, at Gatsby’s in Cresskill. Anyone wishing more information about the club may call 201-385-9244 or the website at www.zonta-teaberg.org.
