Dumont: The Zonta Club of Northern Valley, NJ presented an innovative program on Amelia Earhart at Grant Elementary School on June 9, 2005. Approximately one hundred and fifty third and fourth grade students actively participated and enjoyed a lively PowerPoint Presentation and discussion developed by Nancy Patrissi, Public Relations Chair of Zonta Club. Karen Nicodemus, Zonta Club Amelia Earhart Chair and teacher at Grant Elementary School in Dumont, organized the event. The program entitled, “Finding Amelia - For the Young Student,” helps students learn about the life of Amelia Earhart. It encourages them to explore various research methods for the study of biographies using a variety of resources such as, books, interactive media, and websites. The Zonta Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program was discussed during the presentation, encouraging young students to study math and science to prepare for higher education and eventual careers.

The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowships were established in 1938 in honor of Amelia Earhart, famed pilot and Zonta club member. By her example, Amelia Earhart encouraged women to expand their horizons by exploring occupations and holding positions beyond those traditionally held by women. By supporting the Amelia Earhart Fellowships, Zonta International encourages women to enter the aerospace-related fields and keep the Earhart legacy alive.

The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowships are offered annually to women for graduate study in aerospace-related science and aerospace-related engineering. Since the beginning of the Fellowship in 1938, there have been 1,122 Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards totaling over $5 million to 777 Fellows from 57 countries. The fellowships are funded through annual contributions by 33,000 members in the 67 countries of Zonta International.

Zonta International is a worldwide women’s service organization dedicated to improving the status of women.
